Complete Guide to VAT
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax added to most goods and services in the EU and UK. When a price is shown "excluding VAT" (net), you add the rate to get the price the customer pays (gross). When a price already includes VAT, you divide by (1 + rate) to recover the net amount — the figure businesses use for their own accounts.
Standard rates differ by country: Hungary (27%) is the highest in the EU, while Germany (19%) and Romania (19%) are among the lowest. Many countries also have reduced rates for essentials like food, books and medicine, so the standard rate is not always the right one. This calculator uses standard rates for quick estimates; for official invoices, confirm the rate that applies to your specific goods.
